Modern Mustard Wedding: An Omaha Styled Shoot

If you’ve spent any time on Pinterest or Instagram lately then you know lemon is out and mustard is oh so totally in.  I know it’s certainly made an entrance into my closet (and my brand😂) and I never in a million years would have thought yellow was a color I could pull off. And yet now I can’t live without my favorite velvety mustard sweater from Target.

A few months ago, I met up with Cassi (Owner and Designer extraordinaire from Cassandra Mae Events) over coffee to talk all things wedding, she mentioned she was planning a styled wedding shoot.  (We went to The Mill on Prescot. Super cozy with awesome industrial meets victorian charm. Great place to get some design work done.  Not to mention their brownies are amazing.) Now I was already extremely excited to work with a local event designer, I mean I had just moved from West Virginia all the way to Nebraska and knew next to nobody!  But when she told me the colors were deep blues and mustards I was all in!

Ideas just started flowing!

Finding Inspiration + creating a design that’s a work of art

Cassi’s Pinterest mood board was filled with beautiful slates, mustards, epic tablescapes and tons of velvet!  (Swooning because umm….well you’ll see in few!) So when I started sketching out the design, I knew I wanted something simple with rich colors.  Finding THE perfect shade of mustard was essential and I think I totally nailed it.

The suite itself used modern simple fonts and a good amount of “white” (well yellow and blue) space to contrast the bold colors of the paper.  I love adding quirky things into my design, so I illustrated the menu options for the RSVP and even added a cute illustration of cassette tapes for the song request.

When I design stationery suites, I’m not just looking at the cards individually.

I look at the whole picture and design them to fit together sort of like a puzzle.  So when I was choosing the sizes for the cards, I wanted it to be different than anything else I’d seen or design before.  I love square invitations (the extra postage is totally worth it if you ask me!) and have designed them before, but this time I created a design of each card so that when stacked they would make a piece of art.  Matched with the deep slate blue velvety skinny ribbon….swooning!

Getting to help out with styling

I have a confession…every styled shoot (prior to this one) I haven’t been able to go to!  They have always been out of state and so it’s always been a guessing game how things will turn out.  I have been dreaming to get to go and have some hands-on styling fun. So I had been looking forward to this shoot because it was close to Lincoln and I could actually be a part of all the fun.

So, not sure if any of you all knew this but I actually lived in Bellevue, NE  like 14 years ago while my hubs and I were dating. Which is real close to Omaha.  Hubby and I used to hang out in Old Market for hours walking around, antiquing and eating glorious food. We used to pass The Paxton all the time and I had always wondered what it would look like inside.  Silly high school me didn’t realize I could just go through the door and sneak a peek.

Anywho, on the day of the styled shoot I showed up at The Paxton and was just overwhelmed with excitement for a) getting to be at the shoot b) meeting awesome local wedding vendors and 3) I FINALLY GOT TO GO INSIDE THE PAXTON!  🤣 The art deco architecture in the building is gorgeous and the windows in the ballroom itself are just stunning. (You’ll see they made quite an impression on us in the pictures below.) It’s amazing to think about The Paxton’s history and all that has happened within its walls.

When I got into the room Jess from Ethereal was making magic happen with the florals.

I was absolutely stunned with her talent and skill. The towers of flowers were absolutely gorgeous and I wish I had the room to have them in my house.  Ugh! Not to mention Jess is so sweet and her insight into what plants and flowers would look best for the little details were always spot on. At one point I word vomited an idea and turned around and she not only understood my gobbledygook (I had to google how to spell that!  haha) she made it even more amazing that I could have imagined.

Cassi was also hard at work unpacking all the details that Petals to Platinum Rentals had sent over.

Every detail was stunning.  My personal faves were a gold metal cake stand with a marble top and the gold candlesticks. (I’m a sucker “for gold accents for sure!)  Cassi gave me some guidance on her vision and we set the tables. Now let me tell you something…if you want an epic tablescape for your wedding you NEED to have Cassi design your wedding.  This girl is utterly fan-freaking-tastic at designing a tablescape. The details, the contrast….well just take a look.

Check it out!

Here I am doing fun setup things.  Here I am wrapping the menus in the napkins.

FYI… I’m a master napkin folder now. 😏

I even got new headshots and my makeup done!

We had two Amanda’s at this shoot and both were amazing!

Amanda Lee is an amazing makeup artist who not only did the models makeup, but she did mine too!  (Me doing my own makeup is catastrophic, hence why I use the eyelash filter on Instagram for practically all my stories!)  I was so amazed by her work. Since I don’t wear makeup very often, I just wanted something natural that just highlighted my natural look and she totally made that happen.

While I was offsetting tables with Cassi, Amanda (the photographer) was busy making editorial photography magic with the models.  Words do not describe the absolutely stunning photographs that now exist because of Amanda.  (You’ll see them in just a sec…I pinky promise!)

When it was time to photograph the stationery, Amanda made me part of the shoot and I couldn’t have had more fun.  How she made me feel comfortable in front of the camera and captured my personality as I tweaked the stationery flat lay just makes me smile so much.

The Final Picture

I can’t wait to hear what you think about how everything came together for this gorgeous shoot.  My friends who have already gotten a peek at the pictures are just enamored with the jumpsuit from Noa Brides.  I mean all the looks were gorgeous, but that jumpsuit slays!
